The Cancer Full Moon
It's a magical life!
Alas, there is a flu of some sort going around and I've fallen to it which means I have to spend Midsummer and my birthday in bed! But I'll be better soon. I'm working on various projects in bed with the laptop and the first podcast is in post-production.
My Anthropology geekness is all a-twitter over the discovery and analysis of an intact witches bottle in London. Cool stuff!
Hellenismos and history geeks alike may be interested to hear that Greece is opening a new Acropolis Museum and hopes that it will encourage public support for the Parthenon marbles currently held by the British Museum being returned to Greece. In the meantime, plaster casts of the figures will be displayed in the Acropolis Museum in Greece.

Witch in the Garden
Some more interesting volunteers are showing up, like nettles, purslane and goosefoot but nothing I've planted is ready to harvest yet! My neighbor has some very promising looking raspberries though!
Witch in the Kitchen
I have managed to lose 6 pounds, while quitting smoking and never going hungry. What is this magical method? Am I trying to sell you something? No. Just check out oilpulling and check out hwww.earthclinic.com, the website that introduced me to it. It makes the tastes of cigarettes repulsive and fatty foods unappetizing.
Of course, I love food. So here's a taste of my midsummer feast! (Prepared at home and shared only with the family because of a mysterious virus that is NOT the swine flu.)

Roasted potato and cheese pierogies with red onions, steamed asparagus, strawberries, cantaloupe and feta and spinach chicken sausage (I only serve meat on special occasions).
It's also my birthday and I got this food dehydrator from my kids/mom. My husband's gift is still pending delivery. The food dehydrator was a surprise as I've been dropping heavy hits for both a juicer and a pasta maker since before Christmas so I really am not sure what to do with it. I looked in the book and found a whole bunch of nifty and inspiring recipes only to find out that the majority of them required me to buy extra parts. My kids suggested that I try making raisins out of a batch of grapes I recently bought that weren't too exciting in the flavor department so that's going to be my experiment- and it may have been the inspiration for the dehydrator. So I washed the grapes, dried them, spread them on the trays- they don't fit on the trays very well, too plump, but they are light so they don't get smushed- and I plugged it in. It's loud. It sounds like a vacuum. Actually, it sounds like the popcorn popper. I keep thinking my popcorn is done and I better go get it before it burns. The book says it's going to take 10 to 32 hours. Well, it's white noise and it drowns out the traffic- almost. Stay tuned for more dehydrator experiments. I'm ordering more parts.
From Dawn's Reading List
Today's selection is Growing Up Pagan: A Workbook for Wiccan Families by Raine Hill. This is a visually attractive book with illustrations by Gillian Pearce. It is well laid out and a great deal of thought and love obviously went into it. But it confuses me. It begins with an explanation of the Goddess and God, the latter is described as originally being Cernunnos, later shortened to Herne and I'm not sure that's accurate- but I am not a Wiccan so I can't speak to their mythos and I'm not sure that historical accuracy matters when one is discussing mythos. After this explanation we find several Pagan stories, none of which a purist will appreciate involving Gods from 3 different cultures (I think) leaving me to wonder which of these are The Goddess and The God and how they relate, but I'm a hard polytheist and these sorts of things always confuse me and make me the subjects of friendly mockery. One of the stories I have never heard of, though I am familiari with all the characters, one is an adaptation of a well-known Celtic tale and the other a well-known Greek tale. The illustrations and explanations of symbols are really neat and there is space to practice drawing. Likewise after each section there is a word search and a crossword puzzle. I think this book will appeal to a broad age range, but perhaps not all at the same time. It's a book that parents and kids can come back to and look at again a few months or years later and find something new to appreciate. It's not a book to give a kid and leave alone though. We are, after all, Pagan and there are things in this book that caused me to raise my eyebrows as I know some Wiccans that would heartily disagree. But it wasn't meant to be used alone but as a learning and discussion tool for families. An extra nifty feature is that if you visit Ms Hill's website, at www.rainehill.com, you'll find more stuff to play with there.
Would I get this book for my kids? No. We're Hellenic hard polytheists. My kids would take one look at the retelling of the Greek myth and spend the rest of the day pointing out the inaccuracies because they cut their teeth on Homer. Besides, they're too old for it. I would, however, give this book to my girlfriend's kids. She is much more eclectic than I and she has kids ranging in age from 5 to 12. They will enjoy this book and I will take great pleasure in presenting them with it.
