It is easy to affect the physical world. You reach out your hand and pick up a glass and you have changed the glass and the surface upon which it was sitting, as well as the surrounding air. Take a sip and you have changed the quantity of water in the glass. You may not understand all the mechanics behind picking up a glass; the pressure of your fingers, the nerve and muscle responses inside your hand, the air particles surrounding the glass, the gravity affecting the whole situation, but you have complete faith that you can reach out and pick up that glass. So much faith, in fact, that you can do so without putting much thought into it.
You were not born knowing how to pick up a glass, or how to drink water from it. You did not even know at birth that you had the ability to do so. First you discovered your hands, you explored them, and then you practiced using them. You dropped things, broke them, dribbled water down your face, and then finally, you knew; and it was as easy to do as if you’d always done it. You might still drop the occasional glass, or spill the occasional drink down your front, but this does not negatively affect your ability to do it right the next time.
Magic also takes time to learn and you will make many mistakes but if you are willing to take the time to explore, experiment and practice, you can perform magic just as easily as if you’d been born doing it.
Magic is simply using spiritual means to affect the physical world. No one can deny that physical objects, such as a cool glass of ice tea or a hot cup of coffee, properly applied, can have dramatic effects on the psyche. A glass of wine in a ceremonial setting can have a similar affect on the spiritual. Likewise, the mental and spiritual can have powerful effects on the physical as well as each other. Believing in these affects is the most important aspect of successful magical work. If you don’t believe you can do it, you can’t. It’s that simple.
The reason the physical, mental and spiritual affect one another so profoundly is that they are all made of the same thing. Energy. Matter is formed of energy and your mental processes are formed by chemical reactions and electronic impulses. Everything has energy, which many choose to identify as a spirit, soul, aura or simply an energy field. We have the ability to altar the nature or “personality” of our energy through the power of thought. This is the basic foundation of magic. Those things that are non-living, such as rocks, are also formed of energy but they lack the consciousness to alter that energy, so they have static personalities. This is why you may hear so much about rocks being good for various specific applications. This book will not provide you with lists, but it will give you the skills needed to explore the personality of inanimate objects in order to make your own personal associations.
As most of your personal energy is tied up in mundanei things, like making sure your heart keeps beating, or forming the molecules that form the cells that make up every organ in your body, most of a rock’s energy is tied up in making it what it is. However, you, and the rock, have a certain amount of excess energy that surrounds you, making up your aura. This is what we call spiritual energy. Unlike a rock, you have the consciousness and creativity required to use this excess energy to command your body and mind into action to change not only your physical appearance and your physical surroundings at will, but also the manifestation of your own spiritual energy.
Your spiritual energy ebbs and flows and mingles with the spiritual energy of those people and things you encounter every day. In hectic moments this energy can scatter, leaving you drained and in moments of excitement you may be bursting with so much energy that you find it impossible to concentrate. You can control this ebb and flow and you can harness it. You can also learn to drain off excess energy and how to focus your energy on certain goals and “aim” it at specific targets. This is what we mean by casting spells.
Magic can also be accomplished by sending your consciousness or energy body out from your physical body to perform various acts. This is sort of work is referred to as Astral Work. It is accomplished by entering a trance-like state which allows you to separate your physical self from your consciousness. This is useful for delivering messages, placing suggestions and discovering the answers to questions. Though it sounds complicated, it is nothing more than the sum of several basic skills and knowledge which, once mastered, combine to make astral projection a rather simple feat. It is the mastery of these basic skills that may prove difficult, not because any one of them are particularly difficult, but because of the self-discipline it takes to repeatedly practice them until you can do them with ease. A teacher can guide you through very simple steps toward this goal but it is up to you to apply the self-discipline necessary to achieve mastery of these skills.
You should begin by learning the basic techniques of focus, meditationi and visualizationi, which are valuable for myriad applications both magical and mundane. Only once you have mastered these techniques should you move on to more specifically magical skills. Once you begin practicing magic, you will inevitably apply your own theology and morality to your actions. While I will not preach any specific theology here, I will caution you not to attempt to violate natural laws. You will not be able alter the movement of the sun or moon, for example. Magic is not capable of defying nature; it works with nature and in accordance to natural laws. Attempting to violate these laws will at best accomplish nothing, and at worst, according to some magical theory, lead to extremely negative consequences. This is not a moral or ethical statement. It simply is.
It is also important to understand that casting a spelli on a person means that you are sharing your spiritual energy with them whether the spell is a positive or a negative one. Thus, casting a spell on someone means that you are sharing your soul with him. For the duration of the spell, and possibly longer, you are intimately bonded to that person. This has important implications. At the very least, it makes it easier for them to cast a spell on you. It also makes it easier for them to astrally travel to you, entering your dreams and otherwise spying on you, and possibly finding out things you’d rather they didn’t know. In the case of a magically inexperienced person these dangers may not seem very relevant but this link can still keep a person in your thoughts and dreams long after they should have been let go.
As you go through this website and the tutorials it contains, keep in mind the way spiritual energy behaves. You will discover more about it as you go. It is important that you understand these basic concepts before sending energy out into the world. A proper understanding of the way magic works will in turn give you a proper ethical foundation in which to work, as well as improving the effectiveness of your magical working and ensuring your personal safety.
Magick is all about energy. Therefore, it is vitally important that the aspiring Magick-user spend some time learning how to work with and direct her own energy and that of the world around her. These techniques are useful for just about any magickal system from High Magick to Low Magick to divination. All magick deals with energy, so even if you haven't decided on what magickal system you wish to work in, this section will be of use to you. In fact, even if you never do a bit of magick, it is useful to learn energy techniques to enhance your own personal health and well-being.
One book I have found very useful for learning the basics of energy work is You Are Psychic: The Art of Clairvoyant Reading & Healing. Although it is specifically about psychic development, not magick, the techniques therein will prove incredibly useful to any magick-user.
Although they are often neglected in modern magical education, Journey and Astral work are by far the most important aspects of magical spirituality. They are acheived through trance and/or dreamlike states and using these techniques you can move not only through "dimensions" or realities, but also through space and time effortlessly. This allows you to create magical results without alot of fuss and divinationi becomes a piece of cake. You will find once you have mastered these techniques that you are able to be with people who need you, even when you can't physically travel to their location and they will tell you "I felt you there with me" or "I dreamed about you and I didn't feel lonely". You will also be able to easily plant suggestions in other peoples' minds and communicate telepathically. I use these techniques to maintain closeness with my lover when he travels (He is both a salesman and a musician, so this happens pretty often) and to summon my children home when they are out playing, as hollering gives me a headache. I have also used these techniques to locate the perfect lover for a friend and send her wandering across his path.
In addition to these very practical uses for Astral techniques, Trance is very relaxing to the body and soul and it enhances wisdom and knowledge. It allows you to escape the confines of materiality (meanwhile allowing the body to relax and rejuvenate) and explore things you can't in your physical body. It also helps you to understand things that can't be fully comprehended with your physical mind. You will find that many of the things you learn in an Astral state, though you understand them at the time and may alter your behavior and your attitude accordingly, and yet in your physical state you may not be able to articulate, or even think clearly about the truths that brought about the change in the first place. This is why Astral work is so important. The great Mysteries of magic and the Universe cannot be articulated with the human mouth, or even fully comprehended with the human brain, thus they cannot be taught. You must find them and see for yourself and the best way to do this is through Astral Work.

Well that's great, you may be saying, but how do you do it?
Astral projection is accomplished by first entering a trance state. Entering a trance may seem difficult and even scary to some people the first time, but it's really the most natural thing in the world. Humans are hard wired for trance. Western culture is the only culture that rejects trance as a valid form of spiritual expression. This may be why so many people seek unhealthy ecstatic experiences and become addicted to drugs, alcohol, sex and pornography and thrill seeking. Alli of these fulfill similar needs as trance as all produce an ecstatic state, but they may have harmful affects on the body or on the person's life and relationships.
There are several ways to enter a trance or ecstatic state. One of the easiest is through the use of drugs, and this is practiced in many cultures worldwide, but I do not recommend it in our culture because many of the most useful drugs for this purpose are illegal and those that aren't can have devastating affects on your mind and body. Another way is asceticism. That is, causing yourself so much pain that your consciousness flees your body in an effort to relieve the suffering, thus throwing you into an ecstatic state. This can be accomplished through fasting, subjecting yourself to severe heat or cold or lack of sleep or whipping or cutting yourself. For obvious reasons, I do not recommend this method either.
Not to worry, however, there are many other safe methods of entering trance.
One of the most simple is complete relaxation and focus. That is, you simply get comfortable and focus on something, say the tree in your back yard. Get more and more relaxed, always thinking about that tree and then boom. There you are. But this is difficult for many people. Not just the relaxing, but also the focusing. The reason this is difficult is because your brain is always busy. It's noticing all the sounds around you, the changes in light, the smells and the whole time it's talking to you and telling you how silly you're being. So, you have to do something to keep your brain busy busy.
Drowning out environmental noises with some sort of repetitive sound is much more affective than eliminating them. Drumbeats are the best (180 beats per minute is ideal) but wave sounds or just static are also helpful. This gives your brain something to listen to, but nothing really to wonder about and because it's repetitive, it'll eventually lull it into a place where it's not even listening anymore.
Your eyes also are constantly sending messages to your brain, and again, just blocking out all light isn't going to be as affective as providing some sort of distraction. You can pick a simple picture to look at; something tricky is ideal, like an optical illusion. Your brain will puzzle over it and forget to worry about what your mind is doing. Some people find gazing at a candle is helpful while some people prefer to overload their brain with strobe lights. Don't do that if you have a history of seizures! Disconnecting your TV from the cable and turning it up loud will give you not only and incredibly boring visual but also a annoying audio, which will lull your brain into a stupor in no time.
Your body is also sending messages to the brain. It's saying that you've got an itch, you're a little hungry, you might have to go to the bathroom soon, it's a little too cool in here, don't you think and I think our pants are too tight. If you find your body is distracting you, you'll have to distract it. You can distract your body by repetitive sensations, though you may need someone else's help with this or by submerging yourself in warm water or by simply exhausting it through some sort of exercise.
Many people enter a trance state through what is called ecstatic dance. You may have seen movies in which Voodoo Priestesses or some tribal Shaman performed a rituali dance and received the answers to his or her question, either by journeying to talk to the spirits before or after the dance or having a spirit actually speak through them. Ecstatic dance keeps your brain busy so your mind can wander by tying it up with moving your body, exhausting your body so that it doesn't provide a distraction, and filling your ears with drum beats.
It's difficult to describe exactly what it's like to be in a trance state. Most people don't realize they are in a trance state the first time and once they do they snap right back out of it. This is okay; it's all part of the process. Eventually as you move, or lay there, you will find that the music is very distant, or you will find if you are dancing that you no longer are directing your body, it's dancing on its own. You will be in a dream state- and that's okay. The Astral Plane is simply the dream world, or an imaginal state of being, it's nothing special or unnatural. Astral Projection is merely the act of conscious dreaming. Your mind will begin to wander and you'll begin to see wonders. This is the best explanation I can provide. At this point, it is best just to relax and see what happens. Only after you have done this several times should you begin trying to direct your journey. Then, I believe you find it comes naturally.
Lucid dreaming is the most basic of Astral techniques. If you learn nothing else, learn this.
Lucid dreaming is active dreaming. Not just knowing you're dreaming, but dreaming also with intent. Dreaming is a very important part of many Pagan spiritualities. Ancient lore is full of the messengers of God(s) visiting people in their dreams to give advice, commands and general knowledge. If dreaming wasn't important to the people who first began to repeat these stories, there would be no story, or at least, the messenger wouldn't come in a dream but would knock on the door.
Dreaming is an Astral state. Your soul leaves your body and experiences things in other places. Sometimes in other worlds, and sometimes in this world. I have had several dreaming experiences where my spirit was drawn into that of someone who was experiencing pain, and so I had the nightmare of their pain while their spirit fled. Remember also that the Astral Plane is not limited by linear time, so your spirit can experience things that happened years ago or that have not yet happened. Also, you are able to speak with spirit beings while in a dream state that your material senses can't even detect.
Because you are asleep when you are dreaming, rather than a sort of semi-cosnciousness you might experience with other Astral States. This makes your dreams very difficult to control. The point of Lucid Dreaming, however, is not so much to control your dreams as to experience them fully. Once you've accomplished this you can move on to Dreaming with Intent or simply use Trance to accomplish your Astral Work for there.
So where do we begin?
First, get a notebook. This will be your dream journal. You will keep it and a pen next to your bed. More on this later.
The first step in Lucid Dreaming, that is fully experiencing your dreams, is learning to remember them. Some people say they never dream, but everyone dreams all the time, unless some drug is preventing them (which you should quit right now because addiction and magic are not a good mix). Most of us remember some of our dreams, or at least little snatches. The goal here though is to remember at least one dream a night.
Many people forget their dreams immediately upon waking up because they are quickly distracted with material things- like children, radio, television, the dog, etc. So, we must try to avoid these distractions and give us time to emerge from our dream and write it down before we are faced with day to day distractions. Once it's written down we can forget it.
To avoid these distractions, do not allow other people (or pets) to be your wakeup call. Get an alarm and set it to 10 minutes before everyone else gets up. Do not use a clock radio. You will be immediately distracted by the words of the music or the conversation of the DJs. You can, however, use a recording of classical music, jazz or some other wordless music to wake you up. The alarm on my cellphone with one fo the preset musical ringtones works well for this. A harsh beeping or buzzing will only jar your poor brain into wakefulness, potentially wiping out all memories. Your waking should be gentle and solitary. There are new alarm clocks out now that begin with a low tone and get gently louder and louder. These are great, gentle, and unnecessary. You decide how you're going to wake up.
Once you're awake, before you get out of bed, while you're still in that fuzzy half-sleep state, grab your journal and write about everything you experienced in the night. Even if your entry looks like "There was something about a dog, and I think it was raining. I wasn't in my own identity, I was in my house, or whosever house I was, but it wasn't the house I live in." If that's all you can remember, that's fine. Don't use statements like "I can't remember anymore." or "I don't remember much". Making those statements makes it so. You may find once you starti writing what you can remember, you will remember more and more. If you have trouble with the writing part, you can use a tape recorder instead. Don't try to interpret your dream while you are recording it. Just stick to the facts. You can leave space on the page to go back and interpret it later. Trying to interpret the dream while you write it down is a distraction in itself and you may end up forgetting bits of it.
If you wake up during the night from a dream, write it down right away. Don't think you'll remember it in the morning. You absolutely will not.
Once you've started remembering your dreams, you can work on experiencing them. The key to this is noticing the difference between dream life and waking. You will find these differences in your journal. You will start seeing entries that say, "I was an old man" "I was in a house that was my house, but it's not really my house" or "I was a child" or "My friend Joe who died two years ago was there". Remember these and when you are dreaming you will start saying to yourself "Oh, this isn't really me, it must be a dream." At first this might wake you up, or you might start trying to change the dream. Resist this urge. Just relax and enjoy it like a movie.
It is also helpful in your efforts to realize you are dreaming (and thus to dream lucidly) to set it as your intent before you go to sleep. You may create a short rituali before you go to bed and declare as part of it your intent to remember your dreams. My boyfriend at this stage had a ring I gave him that he put on before he went to bed at night. He always noticed it on his hand because it felt funny. If he was wearing it (which he wasn't always in his dreams, of course) he knew he was dreaming.
Hopefully these few tips can get you started with Lucid Dreaming and eventually Dreaming with Intent and Astral Projection. Feel free to post comments about your own experiences and tips to help others.
Living a magical life is simply recognizing that every act is a magical act. Articles in this section will focus on this goal.
Being mindful of the Alli.
That is, recognizing the Divine in all things, and your connection to it. Everything you do has a ripple affect that touches everything else in the Universe.
All things are connected as part of this great web of life and nonlife. The more you understand this connection, the more successful your magical workings will be, if you choose to perform them.
Mindfulness comes from the heart of the knowledge that everything we do affects everyone else. Magickally speaking, it follows that whatever that affect may be, it is going to come back to us one way or another. Either three times, or one, after death or in this lifetime. Many of us go about our lives in a mindless way, our actions designed to just get things done in the most efficient way possible with no thought as to how these actions might affect someone else. But those of us who are mindful take those extra few minutes to ensure that by our actions others will benefit, or at least not be harmed.
I heard a story once, a long time ago that illustrated this concept. I can't remember where I heard it, but I seem to recall it came from Japan. It goes like this: "A man was travelling on business. It had been a long day and he and was very thirsty. He came to a place where there was a fountain and hanging next to the fountain was a little cup on a hook. He carefully washed the cup and then drank his fill and hung the cup back on the hook. Then he found a seat nearby to rest while he waited until it was time to go to his next appointment. He watched the people going by as he rested. One of those people was an older woman who also came to the fountain to get a drink. She filled the cup, drank her fill, washed it carefully and hung it on the hook. The man was shamed when he saw this, for he knew that she was mindful and he was mindless."
In this story the man took a reasonably efficient route to a drink, but it was a selfish route. He washed the cup to ensure that he was not infected by someone else's germs, but he did not wash the cup afterward to ensure that his own germs did not infect someone else. The woman, however, showed trust in her fellows by not washing the cup first and was careful to protect her fellows from her own germs by washing it after. Her spirit was pure and his was selfish.
In an act as simple as taking a drink of water we can also demonstrate mindfulness. If everyone did this, the world would indeed be a better place! Here are a few small and simple ways we can be mindful in our everyday lives:
When you clean the snow off of your car, don't just clear off the windows. Remove the snow from the top and back, so that it doesn't fly off while you are driving and obscure someone else's view.
When shoveling your walk, shovel the public walk adjacent to your house too. People will appreciate having a clear spot to walk.
When you go to the store, put the cart back, don't leave it in the parking lot for the employees to fetch. It's extra work for them when they could be helping customers instead and the wind could blow it into someone else's car. Besides, walking is good for you.
If you get mail for someone else, write "Addressee unknown" on the envelope and send it back. It could be important!
When you use the restroom, make sure that the seat is cleaned off when you are finished so that the next person doesn't have to wipe up after you. If you cover the seat, make sure the paper you used is disposed of, not left for the next person.
Don't throw garbage or cigarette butts out your car window. It could fly back and alarm another driver and nobody wants to see your garbage on the side of the road or clean it up out of their yards.
If you've got spare change and there's a jar to put it in, drop it in there. Every little bit helps. An handful of coins might buy you a candy bar, but if everyone gave up their candy bars and their handfuls of coins, think how much that could buy a homeless person, a starving child or a stray animal.
If there is a spill, or the bathroom is out of paper towels, or you see something broken, notify someone.
Smile and be polite. Say hello and wish someone a nice day, even if they're grumpy. You may be the only kind person they encounter today.
These are little habits that nobody thinks about but they do affect other people. As you go through your day, think about how your actions affect the Alli and change your habits accordingly. Remember that you benefit from it too because we are all part of the All and everything we do has a domino effect. If you are thoughtful of others, then others will be thoughtful of you. If you behave in a mindful manner, then perhaps one day someone will see you and, being touched by your behavior, will follow your example and you will have made the world a better place.
The more you know about the world, the more successful you will be in manipulating the energies around you. A successful healer, for example, does not just know about sickness, but also about the way a healthy body functions, the affects of nutrition, exercise and psychological issues that can affect the body. He must study not only healing herbs, but harming herbs and not just those, but synthetic drugs as well, their affects, counter indications and interactions. A healer must explore death, birth, health and sickness to be truly great. Ignoring any aspect won’t make him a failure, but it will keep him in the realm of mediocre. Knowledge is power. It’s not just a corny saying. Wisdom comes from a combination of knowledge and experience. We must seek not just to read about things, but also to experience them, to become a part of them, to really know them.
Your body is a physical representation of the Divine. Not only is it sacred in this respect, but it is also the vessel of your personal energy. Your energy is the force behind your Will. The healthier and stronger your body, and the more aware of it and knowledgeable about its workings you are, the better control you will have over your personal energy and by extension your Will.
Your home is your temple. It is where you relax at the end of the day, raise your family, prepare your food, plan your life and welcome guests and if it isn’t, it should be. The home should be maintained as a relaxing, nurturing environment and sanctified to the deity of your choice.
In ancient times, Athenian women celebrated the harvest season with a 3-day festival dedicated to Demeter known as the Thesmophoria. The first day was called the Anodos and consisted of processions toward the rituali site carrying offerings and other ritual items, the second day, Nesteia, was a day of fasting and mourning in sympathy for Demeter’s loss of her dear daughter Persephone. The third day, Kalligenia is a celebration of birth and rebirth. Offerings of piglets and specially prepared bread that had been placed earlier in a special pit in the Megaron (The temple- sort of) were retrieved and taken home and mixed with seed to ensure that the crops would grow strong the following year. The Megaron was traditionally filled with snakes (sacred to Demeter) and the women sang and clapped their hands to chase away the snakes as they retrieved the decayed matter.
It’s not a difficult stretch to see the sense of such a ritual and adapt it to modern times. Although no one is sure when the offerings were thrown into the pit to be retrieved at the end of the festival, it is certain that the decayed matter offered not only the magical aspect of being charged with energy from the festival, and the spiritual aspect of being blessed by Demeter, but Biologically, it would offer nutrients to the young plants helping to ensure their success once they were planted. This instance of ancient cleverness is certainly one we can emulate in our own practice.
While the Thesmophoria is celebrated at harvest time (the first or second week of October would be ideal, though it could be done at the Autumn Equinox as well) preparing for the ritual should begin early in the year, at planting time with a preparation of the Megaron compost pit. While most folks don’t have space, time or money to create an entire Megaron or ritual area to surround their compost pit, and certainly you wouldn’t want to use just any old compost for this ritual, it may be feasible for some of us to set up a designated compost area just for the ritual.
The pit should be sunk into the Earth. There are some pre-fabricated composting systems that can be sunk into the Earth that would be ideal for this purpose or you could make your own. An old garbage can with holes punched in the bottom and side with the lid intact could be sunk into the Earth near your ritual space for this purpose. Those of us who live in apartments or do not have outside areas suitable to the purpose may find the need met by indoor kitchen composting systems.
Compostable/disposable ritual items could then be placed into the container at the end of each ritual throughout the year to be gathered at the end of the Thesmophoria event, ritually mixed with seeds that are then saved through the winter and planted in the spring. I have not tried this and I’m not sure if the seeds would begin to sprout and die, so perhaps the materials should be gathered and bagged and mixed with seed in the springtime, though storing the mixed seeds in a cold area could solve this problem. Alternatively, the compost could be spread in beds in preparation for Spring at the time they are collected. In ancient Greece, where the climate was much milder than where I currently live, much of the planting may have been done in the Autumn or Winter, so they wouldn’t have had this problem.
The process, as I envision it, would go like this:
At the end of each ritual, the feast would be divided up among the group and an offering set aside for the Divine and other Spiritual guests. Those items leftover from the simple feast can then be placed in the composting pit (or Megaron as I am calling it, though it’s not entirely correct). At the time of the Thesmophoria, the processions, fasting, mourning and ritual abuse of traditioni would then be followed for the first two days, and the third day would consist of the worship group collecting the compost and spreading it on the planting beds (or in flower pots) which would have been cleaned and prepared ahead of time in anticipation of the ritual, or may even be prepared as part of the second day events.
In ancient times, rituals and festivals marked the days that certain tasks had to be managed. I like this idea, but as a modern Pagan it is often difficult to connect with this. As I do not raise cattle, sheep or goats, and have a steady supply of milk and cheese all year regardless, the “true meaning” of Imbolc is somewhat lost for example. I also have wondered in the past what is most appropriate to do with the leftovers of the simple feast (our simple feast tends to be quite large, starting with shared bread and finishing with a potluck dinner). We have eaten it the next day, but this doesn’t seem exactly appropriate. Leaving leftovers outside isn’t appropriate for everyone and can attract unwanted insects and other critters, annoying the neighbors and the occasional landlord. This is a great way to solve this problem while also incorporating spirituality into periodic tasks that we might need to carry out, assuming it is something we do anyway, much as the ancients would have done.
The Earth is our material source. More than that, it is our home. It should therefore be treated in the same reverent manner as the building we call home. Walking softly on the Earth may seem like simply a moral issue, and it is, but it is also a magical issue. Many energies a magic-user manipulates or uses comes from the Earth itself or, at the very least, travels through the Earth or is altered by Earth energies. Every single person who walks softly on the Earth helps to strengthen and balance these energies, thus making them more useful for all of us. Also, in walking softly, we are able to learn more about these energies, as we are not blocking them or scattering them by our actions. We are thus able to expand our own knowledge through this practice.
We all want our homes to be clean, germ-free havens of fresh-smelling goodness, but many common household cleaners are toxic and a good portion of them eventually end up in our waterways. More immediate is the affect some of their strong smells have on asthmatics and the fact that they are well, toxic! Rather than risk a call to poison control, isn't it better just to not have that stuff around at all?
Oh you could spend a bit of extra money on organic and toxin free cleaners, (If you do decide to go this rout, I just love 7th Generation Products) or you could use my not-so-secret recipe! 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts water makes a great spray-on cleaner (get the spray bottles from the dollar store, or reuse an old Windex bottle) and it costs so little (a dollar for 16 ounces at my grocery). This will have your windows shining and kills germs too. Not as much as bleach, granted. For really germy spots, add a drop or two of thyme oil if you've got it- it smells like a hospital, but it works. But what about those tough stains? No problem. Plain old baking soda can be used just like Comet to get those stains up. The cost can't be beat! $1 per pound. These can be used in the laundry too. Vinegar helps set dyes (no more pink briefs, unless you want em.) and gets rid of strong odors and baking soda adds power to bleach to whiten your whites, so you can use much less.
WARNING: Do not use baking soda and vinegar at the same time. They react with each other. Unless of course you have a clogged drain. Then you want that reactions. Pour in a cup of baking soda followed by three cups of boiling water, then add a cup of vinegar and stand back!
Do you use dryer sheets? You can get rid of those too. Line drying is best, but we don't all have time for that business. Do you use potpourrie? Do you have some old holey panty hose or trouser socks missing a mate? Just throw some potpourrie in the feet of the stockings or socks, tie a not and throw them in your dryer instead of dryer sheets. They'll leave your clothes smelling heavenly and you can reuse them for weeks! Okay, so they don't help with static, but this has never been an issue for me. I'm told if you wad up a ball of aluminum foil and throw it in there, you'll have no worries. If that doesn't work for you, saturate a washcloth with fabric softener diluted with equal parts water and let it dry. Throw that in your wash as you would dryer sheets and use it over and over again!

Walking softly on the Earth goes hand and hand with living Green and living Green takes effort. It can mean shopping around for organic products, going out of your way to recycle and maybe using less-than-convenient means to get from point A to point B. It is, in short, a way of life. One that isn't suited to everyone. But even the laziest among us can take solice in the knowledge that they are reducing their footprint just going about their business by making a few small changes and then forgetting all about it. It's easy once you know how.
You can significantly reduce your ecological footprint by making wise energy choices that continue to make a difference even while you're napping. One option is to visit http://www.green-e.org/base/re_products?cust=r or http://www.eere.energy.gov/greenpower/buying/buying_power.shtml to find an energy company near you that provides a Green energy option. Here in Michigan we have Green Generation. For just a few extra dollars a month on my electric bill, I am assured that a portion of my energy is coming from renewable sources, like Wind and landfill gasses. And if you can't find a Green-e company near you, you can purchase Renewable Energy Certificates or Green Tags.
Okay, so it costs a bit of cash and maybe you're broke. No crime in that. But green living can save money too, if you know how, and in the end, it can balance out. Whether or not you use renewable energy or RECs or Green Tags, you can reduce your environmental impact using these simple tips-
Buy Energy Star Approved Appliances
Okay, so maybe you're not in the market just yet, but one day you may be. If you're looking for a new washer, choose a front-loading model. These are gentler on clothing and spin out more water than toploaders, so you need to use less energy to dry. New dryers are now available with humidity detectors that automatically shut off when clothes are dry, not only saving you energy, but saving wear on your clothing. If you hate shopping for clothes as much as I do, this is a big deal! These machines cost more up front, but the long term savings is worth it.
Air conditioners and heaters are huge energy drains in the house, but depending where you live, one or the other is a necessary evil. Buying energy efficient models is just the first step. Even if you're stuck with the dinosaur that came with the house, you can improve your efficiency by making sure the filters are changed regularly and having your unit inspected at least annually. If you have forced air, making sure your ducts are cleaned regularly will not only improve energy efficiency but also improve air quality in your home, leading to fewer doctors bills and missed worked days from sinus infections and allergy symptoms. Have them check your seals while they're at it. You could be losing heat through poorly sealed ducts and not even know it. You should also adjust the temperature according to your activities. The house needn't be as warm or as cool while you're sleeping or away from home. Take your pets into account when making these adjustments, of course. Modern thermostats make this easy.
Change your bulbs
The new flourescent lightbulbs do cost a bit more, but they last alot longer and they use far less electricity than the traditional light bulb. Some estimates say each bulb saves $100 in electricity bills for the life of the bulb. My flourescents don't last 5 years (as the package says they will) but they do last alot longer than a regular light bulb and they don't get hot like a regular bulb does, that's got to make a difference in my air conditioning situation.
Turn it off
I mean, really turn it off! Not many people realize that alot of your appliances and computing equipment continue drawing energy after they've been turned off. Chargers drain electricity long after they stop charging and DVD players, cable boxes and computers continue to drain too. Plugi them into a power strip so you can turn off the whole lot when you're done with them and save up to 40% of your energy use! That's huge. If you're just stepping away from your computer for a minute, turn off the monitor. Most of the energy drain from computer use comes from your screen.
